Pirate101 Buccaneer Overview

Buccaneer

The Armored Knight of the Spiral

According to Pirate101:

Buccaneers are sturdy warriors who rely on brute strength to overcome their enemies. They wear the heaviest armor and carry the biggest weapons. What Buccaneers lack in grace or finesse they make up for with raw courage. Withstanding enemy attacks is the key to a Buccaneer’s strategy.

Buccaneer is a class that is lacking in attack powers, but makes up with many useful talents. Bucaneers get quite few epics. We get “vengeance strike” level 2 and “bladestorm” level 2. That allows for up to 3 counter attacks and 3 bonus attacks after killing an enemy. Buccaneers can wear heavy armor and carry some very strong weapons. While Buccaneers seem to be meant for physical tanking due to “armor” talents providing defense, and 3 different types of shield (Triton’s song, Kraken’s Lament, and Leviathan’s Call) reducing the amount of damage received from melee damage. Heavy armor can also supply a ton of magical “resistance”.

Buccaneer’s attack up close and personal. Using “Smashy” weapons and attacking using STRENGTH. Buccaneers gain powers that double your movement in order to cross the board as quickly as possible and start attacking and gaining threat on your targets. Those same powers also reduce your enemies accuracy.

Accuracy reduction will not affect an opponent’s powers (scattershot, jobu’s breath, gunnery, etc), as those will still hit no matter what.

Training Points

  • Privateer- As with most classes, Privateer makes a great secondary class for your Bucc.
    • You gain heals, but also a very useful “Valor’s shield” which defends against all types of damage. Something that your own powers do not.
    • It would also be wise to invest TP into “Slashy Weapons” as many end game weapons for bucaneer are Smashy/Slashy, so you would get bonuses from both talents.
  • Swashbuckler- Another great option for a secondary class.
    • Sneak attack” is a must get power. As it provides great damage and has no pre-requisites.
    • Training in swash will result in greater range movement which is helpful for reaching enemies before the rest of your crew in order to make you their primary target.
    • You also get a nifty damage increase talent. And let’s face it. Everyone loves higher damage.

Conclusion

Buccaneers will be a great, sturdy solo class. Most of your companions will be buccaneer and musketeers, with your own class specific Swashbuckler companion being your first one, Kobe Yojimbo. Buccaneers are meant to take physical damage and dish it right back out. From a PvP standpoint, buccaneers will cause great trouble for Swashbucklers and Privateers, able to reduce their damage greatly.

Witchdoctors and Musketeers will be able to hit through our little resist, and also with a surplus of powers, accuracy reduction will be moot.

In comparison to Wizard101, Buccaneers are like the Ice class. Great defenses, but few special attacks. However, Buccaneers can do some great damage with basic attacks due to their powerful weapons.

I’m excited to see how your Bucc works out in PvP. After Beta, they got a pretty big buff. Definitely keeping my eye on this, wondering how well the class will fare in warehouses of the Spiral.

i really like the epics for this class, i think that’s a huge boost for buccs…i’m not sure yet how epics are going to play out in pvp, but i’m curious to see those in action; if those end up playing a big role, bucc will be in good position

    • AlexJaderider

I feel Vengeance strike will be used quite a bit. Especially against all the presidio companions, El Toro, Monkey king etc. Bladestorm I don’t see as much.

  • DMT001

Have not made a Buck yet. Will have to see how things go. Do you think Buccs are going to have a Hard time with Witchdocters?

    • AlexJaderider

Yes, I do believe I wrote that in there too ;)

      • DMT001

lol, re read it, missed it down there at the bottom. Thanks.

  • Swordroll

I played Buccaneer through 50 in Beta. I was under the impression that they did the most damage period, after factoring in their weapons. The only competition for maximum damage, as I understood it, was a Swashbuckler. Kelsey Fireheart reached 56 or so, and my level 52 still surpassed her in damage. Why is this class labelled as “lacking in attack powers”?

    • AlexJaderider

Not attack power as in like damage. Powers. The little special skills. Like Mighty strike, Sneak attack, etc.

      • Swordroll

Okay, I see what you meant. They certainly do lack the powers. In places like the Volcano house, where you’re close-up, they’ll do fantastic. Put them in a larger area with more obstacles, and they would quickly lose to a decent Witchdoctor. Lots of balancing to be done.

Obstacles actually work in your favor as Melee, breaking line of sight so most of the ranged attacks can’t target you. The Melee classes do have an advantage on smaller boards though, for sure. Makes it easy to start pressuring your opponent early.

Why would you say Buccaneer is more like Ice than like Balance, say?

(I just can’t imagine any school with ‘little resist’ being described as the Ice school… or associate a spell called ‘Bladestorm’ with any school other than Balance!)

    • AlexJaderider

Buccaneer gets high defenses. and powers to block damage. It cannot buff others other than the strength buff. I don’t see how it would be balance. The name of an epic means nothing, That’s like saying if you gave Swash a power called Sprite makes it like Life school.

Great guide Alex! I made a Buccaneer myself, level 35 right now. I am really eager to try it out in PvP!

  • Cunning Matthew

Which Companions would you suggest for my starting 4? I am having kobe yojimbo reguardless, he’s my firstmate and has the most extra hits. And which one would you suggest, El Toro or Kobe Yojimbo? The only difference between the two is Kobe has First Strike and El Toro has Bladestorm.

    • http://www.duelist101.com/ Nick

I’m sure Alex will have his own answers, but for me: El Toro’s 10 round buff is kind of a big deal, IMO. And I think I’ll always have Bonnie with burst fire x2 as a top companion.

    • AlexJaderider

I typically have my top 4 as El toro. Bonnie. Kobe and Barnabus. Other notable ones are rooster cogburn and pig raider crossbow man. My first mate is typically El Toro. The accuracy buff is just too good to pass up. I hate missing.
I like Kobe more due to critical strike. And his swashbucklers strike which is essentially another guaranteed critical. Kobe does have bladestorm. I know because mine has it. But you can’t go wrong with either one

      • Cunning Matthew

Thanks for the replies guys, I am leaning more towards Kobe for increase in promotions, which means more epics. But I guess it wouldn’t matter anyways, with me choosing 2 other companions.

I did several PvP matches this weekend but did not see any Buccaneers, so I am really curious about this class. Mostly my teammates and opponents were Swashbucklers and Musketeers. Can’t wait to meet some Bucs around my level for some PvP!

          • Cunning Matthew

I’d be happy to battle with you, when I am fully leveled.

          • AlexJaderider

I’ll duel you on live realm when it’s out. Only 34 on test :(

        • AlexJaderider

Kobe and El Toro have the same amount of Epics in the end(4).

    • anthony

mine is barnabus ratbeard bonnie hawkules

  • Cunning Matthew

Sorry for all the questions, but I have just a few more. I have seen other Buccaneers use stabby weapons, and shooty weapons. Let’s say for example you had 50/100 strength, and then 50/100 agility, would the shooty/stabby weapons do the same damage as the smashy weapons?

    • AlexJaderider

To an extent. Keep in mind your smacht weapon bonus. You can get smashy 3 when I think you can only get stabby and short 2? Also I think smashy weapons have the highest damage of all weapons. Another point is that at final levels your weapons are smashy/ slashy. So if you train privateer you get bonuses. I think right now at level 50 my buccaneer has 276 total weapon damage. And don’t forget that of you use a short weapon you can’t use mighty strike etc.

    • anthony

nope buccaneer has smashy weapon plus

    • Blueflamingo

Well, I’m currently trying out a slashy/shooty weapon, a Thunderbuss Blade. Unlike most, it relies on Strength. For the most part my character, Scarlet Noble, fights with the cutlas then follows up with the musket to finish the attack. It comes with Blunderbuss Shot, so it can allow me to hit several targets at once. Something my usual spear won’t do.

  • anthony

i’m a buccaneer and i only have trouble in pvp with privateer you need a lot of armor and health against them and you cannot use low health companions
