New Utility Spell Ideas: Death

New Utility Spell Ideas: Death

As we fast approach the end of Empyrea, I believe it is high time we received some new utility spells. As such I have designed 3 new utility spells for each school. I imagine them being acquired at lvl 30, lvl 60 and lvl 90. Each spell follows one of three design principles: 1)Tool(s) a school is missing 2)Team assistive spell and 3)Individual spell. Today it’s the Death school’s turn. All cards created by LegendsoftheSpiral’s Card Creator!

Death Spells

Name: Mortify
Type: Manipulation/Ward
Accuracy: 75%
Cost: 2 pips

Description: Stun an enemy for one round and cast Feint on the enemy.

Explanation: A powerful spell that gives Death the ability to stun. The feint assists the death school in spiking damage even at the lower pip levels which is something the death school often struggles to do. As with all single target, standalone stuns: its accuracy is 10% below the school’s average.

Acquired: Lvl 30

Name: Pandora’s Box
Type: Manipulation
Accuracy: 100%
Cost: 3 pips

Description: Move all negative charms and wards(universal only) from your team to the caster

Explanation: A very useful spell for a support oriented Death wizard. This spell acts as a cleanse of sorts, moving universal charms and wards from your team to the caster. This includes weaknesses and universal traps such as feint. It also synergizes well with the fact that death can then remove these spells from itself via its self-hit spells.

Acquired: Lvl 60

Name: Burial Rite
Type: Manipulation
Accuracy: 100%
Cost: 5 pips

Description: Banish one card from your hand to banish a card your opponent has used that is equivalent in cost. “Banish” means that all variations of the selected spell become unplayable for the rest of the battle. The banished cards will remain in their respective decks but will be “grayed out”(unable to be selected). Do note that only one card can be banished at a time so if you cast burial rite again, the prior banished cards will once again be playable.

Explanation: A very powerful tool for death that allows it to remove an opponent’s tool at the cost of one of its own. Don’t like your opponent spamming Lore? Banish Vampire or poison or any card that’s 4 pips (if you’re really smart you could sacrifice an off school tc). This spell is balanced in a number of ways. For one, the caster is also sacrificing a tool and the caster must have the card to be sacrificed in hand to activate the rite. Secondly, burial rite can only be active for one card at a time. Finally, the opponent must have cast the spell at least once in the battle for burial rite to target(Meaning you will have at least one guaranteed use of the banished card)

Acquired: Lvl 90

This would be great for the death school! It would bring them up to standards with the other schools, possibly at the top with balance and ice!

Out of all these 3, I think Pandora’s Box is definitely the most plausible. Like you said, it would work seriously well with Death’s self-hit Spells, so it would totally seem like something it would use. :p

I really like that last one, but the first two could be improved. For the first one, It would be completely useless in 1v1. Normally, people want to stun with an overtime on yhe enemy. the feint effect is completely useless in that case. If it put a feint at the end of the round, it would only work from first. In my opinion, the spell should give a 40 or 50 percent blade. that way, it could still be used in 1v1.
As for the second spell, I dont think death really needs a team support spell. Death with pigsie is currently the best tank school in. a team. Obviously not as good now, with the beguile nerf (which i think is a big sign of how little kingsisle cares about pvp). I would rather have a spell that trades all negative wards and charms from the death to an opponent, rather than the spell you proposed. Of course, the spell idea still is good for death. It is extremely powerful in team pvp, as the opponent putting on multiple jujus would mean nothing. Dispels are practically useless now, so the “universal charm/ward removal only” isnt a big deal.
I love the last spell, it is extremely good in 1v1. Lore spam could be completely ruined by a death with Burial Rite and a vampire. By the way, would the spell banish a death wizards spell by enchanting the banished card? and would it ban all 4 pip spells from the opponent in the case of vampire?

The first one I designed to work more with Death’s burst damage hits than it’s DoTs since it desperately needs a boost there.
The second one keeps to the design principles I highlighted at the start of the article.
As for Burial Rite: how it would work is once cast it would present the cards in your hand, you would then select the card that you wished to banish. After that you would be presented with cards your opponent casted that battle with the same cost and you would select one of those to banish. So it would be a 1 for 1 card banish(not all 4 pip spells for example)
P.S Thanks everyone for the great feedback!

so burial rite is the answer to juju spamming? i approve of this.

nope, does nothing in 1v1. what it does it take weaknesses from your teammates and give it to you. so useless in 1v1.

Burial rite seems too broken in my opinion.

Death is so lacking at this point that it badly needs a ‘broken’ spell to have a fair chance vs the other schools at max level. Either give death burial rite or make headless horseman give a weakness, -20 or -25. obviously the damage would be reduced slightly.
