Pirate101 Swashbuckler PvP Guide

Tournament Tested Swashbuckler Strats

What I Learned.

Icon_Class_Male_SwashbucklerIf you read the last Pedro Diary, you already know that I went back to the drawing board with my Swash build. One thing that became apparent to me is that Pirates are “casters”. Unless you’re a Buccaneer, and even then you’ll cast a lot, you should be casting Powers just about every turn. Why do I say this?

Because I’ve been in a situation twice recently where it ended up as a 1v1 with my Swash Pirate vs a Swash Companion. In both of these situations, I was out of attack powers, but had serious advantages: Crit buff, heals left, etc. I had more dodge than them, plus Elusive! Basically, it should have been an auto-win for me, as far as the stats were concerned. But what happened? I lost both of these.

When your pirate runs out of Powers to use, it’s not as good as a comp of the same class with similar stats (except Bucc). Sad, but true. You can’t get Burst fire or Relentless or Mojo Echo. In my experience, even if you have a considerable Dodge advantage, the companions land more damage anyway. It’s just a losing proposition. So? You need more powers.

What I Changed.

I went for gear with more Powers. In fact, every single piece of gear that I wear now, it has a power card. An extra Assassin’s Strike, an extra heal, valor’s fortress and leviathan’s call for damage reduction, an extra Backstab, Great Juju for agility buff.

This setup took me to the finals of Pirate101 Tournament #2. The strategy was simple:

Pirate101 Great Juju

Use Great Juju early on myself and my comps. These stats have an impact on how often Burst Fire and Relentless trigger (possibly Crit, too), so even if you don’t have MORE agility (or whatever) than your opponent, you at least want to have the same amount – don’t let them have more than you, their comps will chew you up.

Pressure them fast. In the first 3 turns, get your comps across the board and close to them.

Pirate101 Board

P101 Leviathan's Call Power Updated Card

Cast your shields, Levi’s call and Valor’s Fortress.

Run in with Swash and poison them, preferably with the 5 round poison, and move comps in to attack on the same round.

P101-Poison-AoE

Put an Assassin’s Strike on the Pirate, and hit them with every single one of your Companions until they die. Even if it takes a few turns.

Assassin's strike

Your companions will be weakened, but use them to take out other high priority Comps at this point. Yours will lose the fight, but that’s okay. Use the second Assassin’s strike or a Backstab to ensure that high damage comps like Bonnie go down fast.

Pirate101_Bonnie Anne Quick Draw

Your comps are probably gone now, but that’s still okay. With the pirate gone, you can now use your hiding power. Hide, cast crit buff, and heal up. Then come out of hiding with Assassin’s Strike, Back Stab, or Sneak Attack on any comp you can reach.

P101 Pirate 101 Walk in Shadows Power CardP101 Pirate 101 Assassin's Gloom Power CardP101 Pirate 101 Grand Shadowdance Power Card

Use the 3 round poison and any attack powers you have left to finish up any Comp still standing. You’ve won.

Where It Failed.

In my Finals matches vs the very talented Alex Deathflame, this strategy fell apart. Why? Because he used Leviathan’s Call and Buffs also. In fact, he used even more Agility buffs than I could keep up with, so his Companions went nuts on me/mine. That would be okay, but he also used Leviathan’s call for himself and healed frequently, so it took several extra turns to take him down. This meant that by the time it got down to me vs the comps, mine were already dead and his Agility Boosted companions chewed me up with Burst Fire and Relentless. These matches were pretty quick, and very ugly.

In our last match, I made a strategy change. Instead of my Assassin’s Strike outfit, I went back to the one with the Agility buff. I stacked this up with Great Juju, and finally, my companions did the slaughtering. We took Alex and Bonnie down quickly, but my comps went down in the process. This left me vs El Toro and Wagyu, and I was able to Poison Toro so he only had about 150 health left.

I had hiding power, I had Valor’s Fortress still left, two heals, a BackStab, and a “hurl knife” power. I used hiding so I could buff up – crit buff, and valor’s fortress. He ran his comps away from me though, so I did not get many turns with these powers active to attack. I hit Wagyu with Back Stab, but failed to crit even though my Crit Buff was running. He was damaged, but still had plenty of health. I used Hurl Knife to finish off Toro.

At this point, all of my buffs were gone, all of their buffs were gone, and I no longer had any attacks. I had Elusive going, so I should have been in a good spot.. I cast my heals and let my First Strike and Riposte epics generate damage while I healed up. However, even with two heals, I was unable to hit Wagyu often enough to take him out. I ended up dying.

Fixing the Build

Problems.

There’s one problem with testing in Tournaments – they have rules. We were limited to 1 Leviathan’s call (bucc can use two), 1 Valor’s Fortress, and no one besides Privateer was allowed to use Valor’s Armor. This has a big impact on how matches play out, and how the build does. In regular matches, folks can stack 3 different instances of Leviathan’s call, or carry 3 different Valor’s Armor.. etc. They can really go nuts with the defense if they want.

This means, in my opinion, that the tempo of matches has slowed down greatly. If they’re stacking 2-3 Levi’s call.. there’s 10 rounds where you can’t do much damage to them at all unless you’re using Will based powers. Sad, but true. So I need to figure out how to use Swash in this slower paced environment, where matches will take the first 10-20 turns just waiting for shields to wear out, or getting through Absorbs.

Idea 1: Moar Mojo?

P101 Pirate 101 Mojo Blade Power CardI have a hat with Mojo Blade and a Robe with Mojo Storm, and I’m sure there are more Witchdoctor attack items out there for Swash. This could be a viable solution for creating a damage spike, even if an opponent has lots of Leviathan’s Call/Kraken’s Lament/Etc going. Then vs companions, fall back on the Swashbuckler attacks.

The downside is that Privateers regularly boost their Will, so this would not be very effective against them, or Witchdoctors. It also wouldn’t be enough “oomph” to take down the pirate if my Companions weren’t adding in a heavy dose of damage as well. Still, it’s something to consider.

 Idea 2: More Accuracy.. Duh!

Call-To-ArmsSome of the gear swaps I’ve made have reduced my accuracy, which is part of the 1v1 vs companions problem (although, I still think something is weird there, my elusive should be more effective than that). One answer is a hat I’ve found that gives “Call to Arms“, a 5 round buff for 25% accuracy. This could be effective late-game, to give me the accuracy boost I need vs comps.

Downside: Every gear card I have picked is there for a specific reason. This would remove my Leviathan’s call hat. I can make up for that by using Friar Sand’s Gourd, but that would remove my Great Juju gear card. I could make up for that by using the Agility boost robe, and just sacrifice the extra Assassin’s Strike card.

It’s definitely a workable option, and the easiest route to explore.

I could also just substitute in more base accuracy and dodge from gear, but there is a problem of losing gear cards for that tradeoff – which puts me back to square one, with a build that doesn’t seem to work in the current metagame.

Idea 3: If all else fails, shoot them!

There’s a lot of synergy between Musketeer and Swashbuckler. I originally started training for a Shooty/Stabby setup, but I bought back my points and went for a setup with less powers. It’s time to rethink this option and explore the advantages and disadvantages that the shooty/stabby setup has to offer.

Confounding KitOne issue I had was not being able to find these weapons throughout the game. It’s still a bit of a problem while you’re leveling – your weapons have a huge impact on your damage output, so you need to be able to upgrade them regularly. However, I did find a L45 Shooty/Slashy option: Confounding Kit. I’d have to sacrifice 8 damage and 30% armor piercing to use it, but it may be worth the tradeoff until Shooty/Stabby arrives.

I’ll need to buy my Practice Points back. The 6 points I spent on training Lucky 2 could then be spent into the Musketeer trainer, while still keeping Elusive and Rouse trained. This would give me 3 Musketeer attacks, one trap, one obstacle, and an agility buff (which Swash is lacking).

The first attack it would give is a Snap Shot, which reduces dodge by 25%. Late game accuracy problem solved? Possibly. In addition to that, having the extra powers without having to sacrifice any of my gear would give me more options for longer matches, and that is always handy.

The Agility Buff is 50% for 5 rounds, which I could stack with Great Juju to beef up my companions without having to lose my Assassin’s Strike outfit. Or I could use it instead of Great Juju vs opponents without a 10 round buff, and that would open up more gear options for me. I could use Friar Sand’s Gourd for the Leviathan’s call, for instance. This would give me 2 of those for non-Central matches, or it would let me swap out my hat for the one with accuracy, or even another hat I have gotten which has a fourth Musketeer AoE.

Basically, I think Shooty/Stabby is probably the best way to go. It’s the most complete, elegant answer to all of the problems I’ve had thus far. Now that we can prioritize powers, it makes sense to have even more of them since you can still get the ones you need reliably.

Next time you see Pedro, he’ll probably be sporting a pistol along with his knives.

  3. Swordroll says:

It was interesting to read through this from another perspective. I have to say, of all of my matches, mine with you most impacted my new setup, which I think has been working pretty well.

I actually trained some passive attributes from the Swashbuckler class, so I naturally have some damage bonuses for Stabby weapons. Unfortunately, the only level 45 and up Shooty/Stabby weapon is from the Tribal Crew Pack, and I’m not about to dig for that.

However, Ratbeard that confirmed that for the next update (which, based on his comment, I assume is referring to the next level cap), he is adding over 150 new weapons, with something “cool” at the cap for everyone, however, he’s also adding every type of weapon combination. So, just as you’re thinking that it’d be a nice twist to use dodge-reducing powers, I was thinking that these odd Musketeer boots with Assassin’s Strike would be useful with a weapon like that.

I’ve also explored some of these Call to Arms items that I need to pursue more actively. Swashbuckler and Musketeer items do seem to be pretty close, and I’ve received jewelry pieces with the card. Also, based on my drop theories, if there’s a hat with Call to Arms for you, I’d guess that there’s also a robe and boots from the same location (I’m curious, where’d you find yours?).

Thanks for further filling us in, reading and studying here has been hugely beneficial.

    • Pretty sure I got the hat from El Kaboing in Santa Pollo skyway, while I was farming for my Witchdoctor’s Valor’s Armor. Not 100% certain though. It could have been from Johnny Ringo, or any number of bosses I farmed for WD gear. lol

  38. Interesting stuff, to say the least. Where does it say (and I’m not even really doubting here–mere mystification) that stuff like Juju, Whale’s M., Rally call, Sky Spirit buffs the frequency of epics and crits? In KIs fine print that doesn’t even exist (yet, lol)? Like I said not doubting you saying this as much as I am mystified by the vague non-specificity in the details. Other than that, I’m not too sold on the Shooty/Slashy solution. For one thing in reality you are sacrificing a considerable lot more than mere 8 damage, plus the armor pierce like you said. Stabby Weapons damage talents amass a total of 24 added to the damage stat line and you lose all of it, down the drain. Even if you recoup meager portions of that through +8 Shooty Weapons, Confouning Kit is in itself inferior to other Swash options like Spy Defense, Nightstalkers Krisknives and Smoking Mirror Shards. The thing is: Think of your Epics, First Strike is already LESS than your normal damage, so the nerf to your damage there becomes naturally exponentially more significant and diminished. Same thing with Riposte, in the opposite direction, because it’s more damage than a normal hit, the benefit you derive against opponents there won’t be as severe and taxing on them. All for what? Meager damage through 3 of the puniest Musk powers out there, 5 rounds of -25% straife, the easiest to avoid trap on there shelf? Though I guess Wind Spirit is a definite benefit. On the other hand, you may be able to recoup much of the damage through gear, so I suppose anything’s possible. I just dont know… I know this type of thing is impossible on Musk because you’re basically reducing your range benefit to rubble in the process. Honestly (and sorry for rambling so much) I’m more interested in the Witch angle. You know Moo Manchu’s Hat gives the Jobu’s Embrace +75% Health back card (horrid stats though, weak Resist. weak Str.). I like that one, kind of. Another possibility is Lo Pan’s Hat which can add a second Assassin’s Gloom card to your powers, if that helps at all. If you do go the way of the Shooty combo, I have two boots to recommend for you: Kuji-Kiri Tabi with +9 damage and +25% large area Canister Shot. And Kuroneko’s Paws 11 Agil and Uncanny Shot w/ -75% dodge strafe card. That is, if you didn’t already know. Unfortunately don’t remember where I got them dropped but they are level 40s so I smell Monkey King all over em and I’m sure Central’s got em logged anyway. Buck’s Brim, of course, lol.

    • First: Here’s a link to a discussion on the Official P101 forums where Ratbeard(developer) explains how Str/Agi/Will have an impact on epic abilities: https://www.pirate101.com/forum/messageBoard/listPosts/free_game/8ad6a41c3d3f0452013d47bb173935d2

He does not say that it impacts Crit, but I have noticed more of them when my agility is massively buffed (possibly because comps land more damage with Burst/Relentless which gives them more opportunities to crit). Which Is why I said “possibly crit”.

These stats also work as a type of damage boost/resist. In our tests, when I boosted my agility vs Azores having as little agility as possible, the damage amount was not linear. You get a bonus for having far more agility than an opponent. Similarly, whatever agility she had would block my agility damage up to a certain point.

    • Second: The total damage loss is not as bad as you seem to think. The Confounding Kit will accept Slashy Weapon damage boost, which you get up to Rank 2 by training Elusive 2(which every Swash should have). You do miss out on the 12 damage of Slashy/Stabby 3, since you can only go up to Slashy 2. The total damage loss is about 23, all things considered, and some Armor Penetration. However, the way Armor works makes Armor Penetration not an entirely valuable talent against anything but Bucc IMO.

As Swordroll has pointed out, there is a Shooty/Stabby option available from the hoard pack, and Ratbeard has noted that there will be Shooty/Stabby options available for certain in the next level cap. So, eventually it will be an even better option.

And damage isn’t much of an issue for Swash. The main idea here is to gain 3-4 new useful Powers, address the problem of not having enough in a long match. It’s not about range at all, Swash is always in the middle of the fighting with their attacks, which is why I focus heavily on Shielding with Fortress/Levi’s Call. I don’t need more distance from targets.. I just need more powers, and I need some kind of dodge/accuracy advantage late-game.

    • Anyway, hope that addresses some of your questions/concerns. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

i know this is a little bit of topic, but do swashbucklers get the most companions? or is it privateers?

Wow, can’t believe I missed such a good article. Hopefully I am not too late to the party 🙂
I agree that us player characters are “Casters”. This holds true for every class but Buccs. Out of all the losses I have had with my Musk, I’ll say 9 out of 10 were because the opposing player killed my Musk in the early-mid/game. If my Musk is left to do his thing, very rarely will I lose.
With that said, I feel that Swashs are different. They take advantage of this. While still casters, I think its better for a Swash to go in, do as much damage as possible, take damage and die in the process, then have his companions do clean up. The problem then becomes trying to find an effective way to perform this strategy against opponents like myself who will Lev’s Call and Heal a lot.
Anyways, with the new updates in Test realm, there is a greater potential for a Stabby/Shooty combination. I have seen two Stabby/Shooty weapon sets, as well as plenty of gear items with the x2 damage X and + shots from Musks in Swash gear, allowing for not only powerful damage but also AoE damage. I too think this is the way to go. As we speak I am leveling up a Swash/Privateer simultaneously, and I plan to go the Stabby/Shooty route with my Swash. What do you recommend for spending practice points?

What gear has great juju, etc?

  42. Merciless Jean Percy says:

    MORE! Lol, just kidding
But seriously, I need more of these guides, especially after this level cap where we now have a bunch of new talents/ powers, and your guides are so usefull!
    Please make more!!!

  43. That’s a very nice discussion that could provide help we all appreciate, Although, now there are The tower of Moo Manchu’s gear and weapons, Would you still use this strategy? And now, hides can’t be ruined by attack with AoE’s, and there is the new Assasin’s shroud poison that prevents healing, Those new implements had a great change in Swash’s PvP strategy. I would definitely love to see a new PvP post that includes the new changes and the new style. 🙂
