Dear Diego: Page Three

Dear Diego

 Dear Diego 6

I’ve had six matches. Well, I should say I ENTERED six matches. My computer disconnected during two. I guess that means my loss counts as a flee. The reason I say this is because when I logged back in and tried to queue for a match, the game told me, “You recently fled from a match, you can sign up for another one in five minutes.” Or something like that. It made me mad, because I didn’t flee. Anyway, I lost three matches and I won three.

My second loss made me mad. The other player was level ten and had an Efreet pet. So of  course, he just saved up pips and one-shot me. I really don’t understand why KingsIsle won’t fix that. Efreet is a level 78 Fire class quest pet. There’s no other game that allows a  level 10 player to go into a PvP match with equipment that can be obtained only via a level 78 quest.

Part of the reason I haven’t been in the PvP ring much is I’m spending a lot of my Wizard101 time trying to hatch a better PvP pet. My current pet, a Nighthawk, is a dud. It has Spritely, which it doesn’t cast very often. And is has May Cast Storm Shield, which is only casts…wait for it…right after I’ve been hit with a Storm spell. Not very helpful, as you can imagine. I really want my pet to be a Nighthawk, because my last name is HawkCaller. But I really need a pet with Spell Proof and Spritely to do well in PvP. So I started hatching.

I hatched a Fierce Hound that has both talents with my Nighthawk. The good new is, the resulting pet has Spell Proof and Disarmament (a spell card that removes one positive charm). The bad news is, I’ve trained the pet to Ancient and still no Spritely, even though both parents have it! Oh, and did I mention…the pet that came out of the egg was a Fierce Hound, not a Nighthawk. So AFTER I get Spritely on the new Fierce Hound I’ll have to hatch again, hope for a Nighthawk, and hope for both Spritely and Spell Proof. It gets pretty complicated.

Also, as a level 16 wizard, I don’t have much Energy. I have to garden for Megasnacks to raise my pets and to raise gold for the next hatch (selling the reagents and treasure cards). But then I don’t use much energy to train them when I DO get the Megas. So I’m putting the Mega snacks in the shared bank, and one of my big sisters is training the pet for me.

See what I mean? It’s complicated.

Back to the PvP ring. In the next match, I was paired against a Commander. That’s right, I’m a Private and I was paired against a Commander. I could only imagine how much better her gear was and I wasn’t happy about the imbalance. She saved up pips for a big spell that fizzled. I had cast a Minotaur. At the last moment, she fled. Her rank went from 826-800.

When I explained to my friend Jeff that she fled and lost 26 points, a friend of hers in the arena laughed at me and said she didn’t lose any points because she “used the glitch.” Some players think there is a glitch that stops you from losing points from your rank if you disconnect or exit the game instead of losing a match. It was a great way for sore losers to hang onto their rank instead of taking their defeat fair and square. However, that was recently fixed.  I laughed myself, because this time the game treating a disconnect as a flee really worked in my favor!

Oh, and by the way, thanks to her fleeing I am now a Corporal!

My very last match of the night was fun because, not to be mean, the player I was up against was a little goofy. He was fire, and he had no wand. He saved up a lot of pips to cast a Heck Hound.

In the meantime, I cast three Volcano shields (70% off Storm and Fire) and a tower shield. Then, I picked a Minotaur treasure card to cast. Even though he went first, and had two blades and two traps, I won. My shields protected me while the Minotaur wiped him out.

If he had a wand, he could have taken out my shields while he built up pips for that hound, and my goose would have been cooked. Or I guess my Hawk would have been cooked.

I wonder if KI will ever put a Goose pet in the game?

Okay, that’s just silly. I think I’d better stop writing in my journal and go to sleep!

  1. Congrats on your wins. To bad on the disconnect losses, they are always hard to take. I wish it would go back to where you can get back in the battle if you have connection issues. You are on the right path. Keep up the good job.

  7. yay, congrats on the wins. and i agree 100% that school pets should be level limited. i think it really throws off the balance of the system, would be nice to see that changed at some point. thx for this update, it’s always much fun to read. and good luck with the hatching project…yikes, hatching can be so tricky, hope you get a nice spritely/proof hawk very soon.

  8. I love this! Nice 1st person narrative with a touch of Iri’s kevin and warlord series tossed in.
